Family Sponsorship

Family reunification is an issue that the Canadian Immigration System attaches great importance to and receives a high number of immigrants through family reunification each year. Adults who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents can apply for sponsorship to grant certain family members permanent residency in Canada, if they meet the conditions.

Family members who can be sponsored:

  • Common Law Partner (for a period of at least 1 year)
  • Conjugal Partner who cannot share the same house due to social/cultural reasons, but has been together for at least 1 year (same-sex relationships are included in this category)
  • Dependent children under 22 years of age
  • Children over 22 years old but in need of care (subject to some additional conditions)
  • Parents
  • Grandparents
  • Siblings, nephews or grandchildren who are under the age of 18 and single and whose parents have passed away
